A&W is famous for its local fast food in Okinawa, but you can't miss JEF, which is popular for its Nu-Yaru Burger(Bitter melon and pork luncheon meat burger). While driving to the southern part of the prefecture, I had breakfast at the Tomigusuku branch.
ゆったり過ごせるモーニング
JEF Tomigusuku branch opened in 1980. The interior has a retro atmosphere that brings to mind its history. There are many elderly customers, and it's nice to have a relaxed time away from the hustle and bustle.
There were a lot of elderly customers, so I thought maybe they had a calm Japanese breakfast... but the menu was mercilessly American. You can choose from 240 yen(300 yen ~ in 2024) depending on how hungry you are. All meals come with a drink, so it feels like a good deal.
This time I ordered the morning dish set with bacon on top. The drink was JEF's original orange juice. When it was served on a plate like this, it looked like a hotel breakfast.
Bacon and fried egg on toast is delicious. It's not particularly tasty, but the familiar taste is comforting.
For those who want something a little more substantial, we recommend the Chili Dog breakfast, which is a hot dog topped with chili beans. The soft hot dog goes well with the spicy chili and crunchy onions. It also comes with a salad, so it's nutritionally balanced.
The original orange juice has a subdued sourness and a rich sweetness. Hot coffee is free to refill. If you want a refill...
The coffee is poured from the coffee server next to the counter. The waiter who greeted me with a smile said, "Please drink as much as you like." This kind of casual interaction is one of the charms of JEF.
Drive-in orders are fun too
You can eat in, of course, but it's also fun to order from the comfort of your car at the drive-in. The Nu-Yaru Burger, a bitter melon burger with egg, is a popular local burger. There are many other menu items as well.
As I was staring blankly at the outside, I saw an old lady leaning out of a taxi to order. She must have been here more than once or twice, and seemed to be very experienced! There were many regular customers, and it was clear to see how much JEF Tomigusuku branch is loved.
After your meal, enjoy the great view from the hilltop before departing for your next destination. It's only about a 10-minute drive from the airport, so if you're planning on arriving in the morning, why not consider stopping here for breakfast?

Parking information for JEF Tomigusuku branch
Compared to A&W, which is popular among tourists, JEF has a higher local ratio. The Nuyaru Burger is popular, but the menu and atmosphere are full of local flavor in the morning, so it is especially recommended. And the staff are also charming.
