Toyohanten Chatan is a long-established Chinese restaurant with a history of half a century since it was founded in 1974. It is a well-known Chinese restaurant that represents Okinawa, and has been a part of the lives of Okinawans, offering casual lunches and dinners, as well as family and friends gatherings and special occasion dinners. Although it may be a little late, we visited the restaurant for lunch this time, so we would like to introduce its charms and recommended ways to enjoy it.
A popular restaurant loved by locals
The first floor of the Toyohanten building is a parking lot and takeaway area, and the second floor is an eat-in space. The furniture and furnishings imported from Taiwan by the previous owner are tasteful, and the dim lighting creates a very nice atmosphere.
The clientele is very international, with locals, Americans connected to the US military, and people from the Middle East. Among the locals, there are many groups of middle-aged women, giving the place a "surefire vibe."
Reasonably priced lunch menu
The menu looks like this. In addition to the Chatan branch that we visited this time, Toyohanten also has a Naha branch, but it has no atmosphere like a major chain restaurant. All ingredients are carefully prepared from the preparation of vegetables, and you can enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine mainly by chefs from China under the guidance of a culinary advisor invited from Taiwan.
Fried rice and mapo tofu are popular!
I asked the staff and they told me that fried rice and mapo tofu are the most popular, so I ordered those two. The weekly special set is a little more expensive but seems like a good deal, so if you like the menu of the week, I recommend that.
Drink bar & soft serve ice cream
Another nice thing about Toyohanten's lunch menu is that it comes with a self-service drink bar. It's perfect for a leisurely lunch with family or friends. There's even a soft serve ice cream machine, so the possibilities for arranging your drink are endless. Following the advice of a staff member who told us, "Regular customers enjoy making it into a coffee float," we enjoyed it freely.
A rare drive-thru at a Chinese restaurant
There are many drive-throughs in Okinawa, a car-oriented society, such as pharmacies, supermarkets, and bento shops, but it is very Okinawan to see a Chinese restaurant also adopt a drive-through. Frozen meat buns and bean-jam buns can be difficult to microwave because some parts become hard or cold, but the packaging that allows steam to escape makes them naturally fluffy.
"Toyohanten" is attractive for its taste, atmosphere, and service. It is sure to be a great choice for a wide range of occasions, from everyday lunches to special occasion dinners.

Popular hotels for tourists such as "Vessel Hotel Campana Okinawa", "La'gent Hotel Okinawa Chatan", and "Lequ Okinawa Chatan Spa & Resort" are also within walking distance, so it is also recommended for tourists. By the way, in my house, the hand-wash car wash at "ENEOS Shiroishi Service Station Chatan Mihama Branch" ⇒ Toyohanten is the standard route.
